Pharmacological action

Natural borneol is(+)-borneol and is widely used in food and also used for analgesia and anesthesia in traditional Chinese medicine.

Borneol, a monoterpenoid alcohol, is a semi-volatile active drug component that is consumed widely, particularly in combined formulas

for preventing and curing cardiovascular disease in traditional Chinese medicines. Borneol was also approved by the US FDA as a flavor (21 CFR 172.515).

Borneol is a highly lipid-soluble bicyclic monoterpene found in essential oils of various medicinal plants.

Borneol is a fragrance ingredient used in decorative cosmetics, fine fragrances, shampoos, toilet soaps and other toiletries as well as in non-cosmetic

products such as household cleaners and detergents.

(+)-Borneol produces mild sedation in mice when inhaled. It has been reported that(+)-borneol directly potentiates GABAa ctivity at

recombinant human GABAA receptors. Borneol has antinociceptive effect on acutepain models, and its effect on chronic pain.

Borneol is frequently used in the preparation of topical analgesic, antipruritic, and anti-inflammatory drugs, and as a penetration enhancer of drugs.

Both synthetic borneol (SB) and natural borneol (NB) are widely used in Chinese medicine. SB consists of d-borneol and isoborneol, while NB only

contains d-borneol.

Borneol is a representative drug of the aromatic resuscitation class used in traditional Chinese medicine。 Borneol (BO), from resin of Dryobalanops

aromatica Gaertn. f., has been frequently prescribed for CNS illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, cerebral ischemia, cerebritis, and cerebral

edema, in China.

Borneol exerts a wide array of therapeutic properties such as radical scavenging, antioxidant and antimicrobial, antifungal, antiepileptogenic,

antihypertensive and antioxidant, antithrombotic and antiplatelet, immunomodulatory, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory, vasorelaxant effect on rat

thoracic aorta, and neuroprotective effects.
